Smith: Unfair of chairman to wait to announce if running again

Former Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) MP and Cabinet Minister George Smith said yesterday that it would be "unfair" of PLP Chairman Bradley Roberts to wait "just before" the party's convention to decide whether he will run as chairman again.

"It is unfair to anybody who aspires for the position of leader, deputy leader, or chairman," Smith said.

"It is unfair to those people and the delegates that the leader not indicate well in advance, for the present deputy to indicate well in advance, for the chairman to indicate well in advance whether they intend to go."

Smith said potential candidates need at least two months to gather support from the delegates. Roberts has confirmed that the party will hold its convention in the last week of October at the Melia Nassau Beach resort on Cable Beach. This will be the first PLP convention since 2009. Smith said yesterday that this is long overdue.

It is unclear whether Prime Minister Perry Christie will step down as leader of the party. However, Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe and Deputy Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis both said this week that if given the chance to lead the party, they would take it.

Tall Pines MP Leslie Miller said he supports Davis for leader.

When asked about Wilchcombe's chances of winning, Miller said, "I hope to live forever too, but that's not going to happen."
