Davis 'ready for PM job'

Deputy Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis declared yesterday that he is "ready for the job" of prime minister.
But Davis said his plans are dependent on whether Prime Minister Perry Christie steps down ahead of the Progressive Liberal Party's (PLP) October convention.

"If there is a vacancy I'll be there," Davis said outside Cabinet.

Asked if Christie has indicated whether he intends to seek another term as prime minister, Davis said, "Not yet."

When asked what he brings to the table, Davis said, "me".

Davis' confirmation came after Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe said that he is ready to the lead the party.

On Tuesday, Tall Pines MP Leslie Miller said he believes Davis would be a better person to lead the PLP.

"I support Brave Davis...Mr. Davis is always the PLP's go-to man. Whenever the party is in trouble who do we go to? Brave Davis," Miller said.

Davis said yesterday that he is "warmed" by Miller's support.

The Guardian also caught up with Wilchcombe outside Cabinet and asked him his feelings on Miller's comments.

"That's democracy. At the end of the day I am hoping that if the opportunity comes I can convince the brother," Wilchcombe said.

"He's a great guy. We've worked together and served in the Cabinet together.

"We've had many exchanges on many issues, so hopefully one day I'll get an opportunity to prove to him that I deserve his support."

Wilchcombe was also clear that the PLP has a "sitting leader that we support".

When asked if Christie is stepping down, Wilchcombe said, "We are working on the premise that Mr. Christie is going to stay.

"At the appropriate time he will indicate to us what he wants to do.

"What we must do, we who have interest is to constantly prepare ourselves and constantly give the knowledge and experience to step in if the opportunity provides."

Christie has remained tight-lipped on whether he will retire ahead of the 2017 general election.

PLP Chairman Bradley Roberts revealed that the party will hold its convention in the last week of October at the Melia Nassau Beach resort on Cable Beach.

The last PLP convention was held in 2009.

The party was scheduled to have a convention in 2013, but that was postponed until November 2014. However, it did not happen then either. It is mandated to hold one annually.
