Sculling Races bring excitement to Long Island Regatta

Over the Labour Day weekend, visitors and residents of Long Island learned the true meaning of excitement when the Bahamian Brewery sculling races were held at the 48th Long Island Regatta.

Over the past few years the Bahamian Brewery and Beverage company has been traveling throughout The Bahamas revitalising the sport of sculling at local regattas.

It has long been the passion of the brewery owner, Jimmy Sands to keep this Bahamian tradition alive. All of their work is now coming to fruition as Long Islanders and visitors alike were talking about the sculling race all week.

From Seymour’s in the North to Gordons in the South, sculling enthusiasts were arguing about who they thought would be the winner of the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ sculling races.

“We’re incredibly pleased that sculling is catching on throughout The Bahamas,” said Lynden Johnson, Bahamian Brewery and Beverage Sales Manager.

“The crowd really enjoyed the action, and many spectators said that they’re going to start practicing for next year’s sculling races.”

Registration for sculling began early on Friday morning at 10 am, and once the regatta races were ending, the sculling action began.

After five fierce heats, where scullers gave their all on the water, Josh Green of Mangrove Cay, Andros was crowned the sculling winner for Long Island, with local boys Rodney Knowles placing second and brothers Dennis and Alton Fox tied for third place.

Later this year Josh Green will travel to New Providence, on an all expenses paid trip, to participate against the other Family Island sculling winners who have competed throughout the year. He will vie for the 2015 Sculling Championship of The Bahamas.

The next stops for the Sands ‘Man in the Boat’ sculling races are in Treasure Cay, Abaco on July 11th. The Truly Bahamian sculling team will then make their way to Grand Bahama where the races will be held on July 18th during the Grand Bahama Regatta.

You can see more photos from this year’s sculling races in Salt Pond, Long Island, Georgetown, Exuma and Nassau, New Providence on the Brewery’s website and Facebook pages.

Sign up for all races takes place at the regatta venue on the day of the events, all participants are welcome – ladies too!
