Carnival payments 'still being processed'

The Bahamas National Festival Commission (BNFC) is still processing outstanding payments for people who worked during Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival. In a statement, the commission said it mobilized hundreds of Bahamians during the festival to provide an enriching experience for patrons.

"Presently, we are processing payments in compliance with standard government procedures and we are working tirelessly to ensure the process is completed as quickly as possible," the statement said.

"Our staff will be calling all of our Bahamas Junkanoo Carnival 2015 workers with times for pickup for their checks once the process is complete. We appeal for understanding as we work to ensure everyone is compensated for their contributions."

The commission thanked workers and suppliers who "contributed their time, efforts and services" to make the festival a success.

"Without the hard work of volunteers, paid staff and contractors the event would not have been the resounding success that it was," the commission said.

BNFC Chairman Paul Major has admitted that some of the food vendors were disadvantaged because of where they were placed within the festival's Da Cultural Village.

"We have to figure out how to accommodate all of the vendors and better position them or better spread out the entertainment," he said a day after the festival.

Major has reportedly said that the commission would likely reimburse some of the vendors.

Carnival was held May 7-9. The government budgeted $9 million for the festival.
