Walking for Cancer raises $8,000

Mon, Feb 8th 2010, 12:00 AM

More than 400 supporters walked their way to $8,000 for the Abaco chapter of the Cancer Society.

Organized by Leah Pinder, a breast cancer survivor of six years, the Breast Cancer Awareness Walkathon in Abaco included 415 registered participants.

The event was sponsored by HG Christie and Insurance Management.

Pinder, an agent for HG Christie's Abaco office, had the company's full support for the walkathon. Director and Vice President of HG Christie Ltd, John Christie, and several members of the HG Christie team flew in or travelled by boat to Abaco to support the three-mile walkathon. "This success demonstrated the importance of the issue of Breast Cancer within this small community.  Everyone left touched and empowered.  HG Christie wishes to extend their deep sense of gratitude to Leah Pinder and her wonderful circle of support for organizing such a phenomenal event.

"We look forward to next year.  We are sure it will be outstanding."

In addition to raising money, organizers aimed to create a survivors' directory to improve support within the community.

Many women openly shared their breast cancer experiences with the people who came out, urging all women of 30 and older to get regular mammograms. Many left convicted to “Check their Boobies”.
