Being a good corporate citizen is something that is taken very seriously at Bahamas Waste. Recently the company proved their commitment by donating the supplies necessary to do a much needed clean-up on Raymond Street.

“We have been working with Violets Are Blue (Ltd.) and Rotary for the better part of a year identifying areas of need, getting in there and cleaning them up,” said Francisco de Cardenas, Managing Director at Bahamas Waste. “Recently, it was brought to our attention that Mrs. Martha Dean, an eighty-five year old resident of Raymond Street was in need of serious help and we thought to ourselves that there was no better cause than this one.”

Mrs. Dean has been a longtime resident of the area and while her home is kept in pristine condition; the areas immediately surrounding her home were piled with trash and debris. Bahamas Waste teamed up with Violets Are Blue (Ltd.), Rotary Club of East Nassau and Heritage Rangers to remove the trash and restore her home to its former glory.

“We have worked with Bahamas Waste on clean-up efforts in the past; we thought that cleaning up around Mrs. Dean’s home was an excellent way for us and Bahamas Waste to give back to the community,” said Ulrich Voges, Violets are Blue (Ltd.). “This time it was truly a community effort, with members of the community seeing what we were doing and pitching in to help too.”

Voges’ team also built new planters in the yard across from Mrs. Dean, after the clean-up was done to help beautify the area and brighten up Mrs. Dean’s view as she is homebound. “All the wood and plants used for the planters were recycled material,” said Voges. “A little green goes a long way to beautify an area and can make such a difference in the community feel.”

Bahamas Waste estimates that they have donated over fifty thousand dollars over the last few years in manpower, waste hauling services and more with Voges’ team and Rotary. “We’ve worked together to clean up communities, beaches, neighbourhoods and several homes throughout Nassau,” said CEO de Cardenas. “As we say here -- it’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it! It was a pleasure to help Mrs. Dean who obviously cares so much about her home and wants her community to look good.”
