The race is set to begin for the national titles

Sun, May 17th 2015, 11:53 PM

This evening, Mario's Bowling and Family Entertainment Palace will be a beehive of activity as the campaign for the 2015 Bahamas Bowling National Champions (men and women) gets underway.

The men's defending champion is Leonardo Davis, and he will be ready to go as the first block gets underway. The 2014 ladies champion Xynea Johnson will not compete this year, and therefore, a new champion will be crowned. The opening ceremony will begin at approximately 6:45 p.m. this evening, and after the short ceremony, the competition is expected to start at 7:00 p.m. The champions will compete in the World Cup of Bowling, set for later this year.

David Slatter, Richard Pyfrom, Sonith Lockhart and the current champ Davis will have to battle for their spots in the top five.

All bowlers will bowl a mandatory 15 games qualifying in blocks of three, and the top 15 will bowl an additional five games to determine the top five. Those five bowlers will bowl in the TV finals. No position is secured.

Bowlers will have to bring their "A" games if they want to bowl on "Championship Sunday", May 31. Mario "Hawk" Brown, Yule Hoyte, Alcondo Hepburn, Tyrone Knowles, Derrick Burrows and Ryan Davis all have their eyes set on making the top five. They won't go away quietly.

On the ladies side, the battle is already heating up. Driskell Rolle wants to return to the winner's circle, but she must go through Jonice Lockhart, Janice Hoyte, Camille Rolle and many others. Rolle won the national title two years ago. Although the numbers on the ladies side are slightly down, the competition is expected to still be fierce.

Bowlers will be bowling throughout this week and next week, culminating with "Championship Sunday" on May 31. There will be divisional winners in the following categories: Men - A, B, C, D and E; and women - A, B, C and D.
