A Bahamian woman and man have been arrested on suspicion of human trafficking, police said. Police picked up the woman, 36, of Sunset Meadows, off Cowpen Road, on Friday. After questioning her, police arrested a man, 37, of Poets Drive, Sea Beach Estates, at Lynden Pindling International Airport on Saturday. Police believe they may be involved in a wider human trafficking operation.

In February, a Bahamian man and five South Americans were arrested on suspicion of human trafficking. Police, acting on intelligence, went to a resort in western New Providence and found the Bahamian, a Colombian woman, three Venezuelan women and a Venezuelan man. Police suspected the foreigners were in the country illegally for the purpose of solicitation for prostitution.

National Security Minister Dr. Bernard Nottage recently said considerable efforts have been made toward identifying trafficking victims. He said the government is working to meet the international obligations to combat trafficking. Countries around the world, including The Bahamas, are rated in the U.S. Department of State's Trafficking in Persons Report.

Over the last two years, The Bahamas has maintained its tier two status in the report. According to the 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report, Tier 2 countries are those whose governments do not fully comply with the Trafficking Victims Protection Act's minimum standards, but are making significant efforts to bring themselves into compliance with those standards.
