Bahamas Consul General to Atlanta Randy Rolle returned to work abroad yesterday "following a period of intensive review, reflection and consultations", according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His return to duty in Atlanta comes a little over a month after he was arrested on Bimini and subsequently released.

Rolle was handcuffed and detained for "disorderly behavior", according to Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade, who said he was released pending "further investigation".

The ministry advised yesterday that Rolle provided an "unsolicited apology and expression of regret, together with a full understanding of the way forward". He returned to New Providence on April 9 for "consultations with his principals at the headquarters".

The ministry said, "The matters arising that resulted in the return to Nassau have been thoroughly investigated and the appropriate authorities, both at home and abroad, were consulted. There are no outstanding issues with those authorities.

"During this time, a review of all the procedures generally of heads of missions and the standards of conduct expected of them were reviewed with all posts."

The matter gained public attention after Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Michael Pintard suggested that Rolle was released because of political interference.

Both Rolle and Greenslade denied the claim. Greenslade said Rolle was driving around in a golf cart when police stopped him. He said Rolle was attempting to drive in an area that was cordoned off when he got into a verbal spat with officers.

On April 9, Prime Minister Perry Christie announced his intention to sue Pintard, claiming that the FNM chairman "falsely and maliciously" accused him of interfering in the release of Rolle. In the face of the lawsuit threat, Pintard and his attorney, Fred Smith, have refused to back down.
