Young athletes shine at Star Kids Track Meet

Hundreds of junior track and field athletes were thrilled at the chance of finally get back on the track after a long layoff, as the Star Trackers Track and Field Club held its annual Star Kids Track Meet over the weekend at the original Thomas A. Robinson Stadium. The meet was designed to give the younger athletes, particularly those under the age of 12, a chance to showcase their skills on a big stage.

Head Coach of Star Trackers David Charlton said that the kids were grateful for the opportunity to get on the track, and that he was pleased with the way the meet went off.

"As far as the meet as a whole, I thought things went well," he said. "The kids were really appreciative to get on the track, especially since they haven't had the chance to since February. I want to publically thank everyone who took the time out to make this meet a success, from parents to BACO (Bahamas Association of Certified Officials) officials."

Extreme Athletics' Head Coach Nekeno Demeritte said that it was "refreshing" to see the younger kids getting a chance to perform, and suggested that more meets of this nature should be held to keep the younger athletes more involved.

"I feel this was something that should have been done a long time ago," he said. "It's good that the younger kids got a chance to get out, and execute some of the things that they go over in practice everyday. A few more of these would be good to help develop the athletes as they prepare to move up in age groups."

As far as the action on the track is concerned, Godfrey Arthur won the under-16 boys 100 meters (m) in a time of 11.43 seconds. Kendrick Major won the under-14 boys 100m in a time of 12. 82 seconds and Otto Laing won the under-12 boys 100m in 13.47 seconds.

Kion Burrows won the under-8 boys 60m dash with his time of 9.70 seconds, Zoe Adderley won the under-8 girls 60m in 10.43 seconds, and Nicholas Turnquest won a gold medal in the under-6 boys 60m in a time of 12.92 seconds.

In the relays, Fast Forward Athletics "A" Team won the under-10 girls 4x100m with a time of 1:03.22, Extreme Athletics won the under-12 girls 4x100m relay in a time of 57.93 seconds, and in the under-16 girls 4x100m, Club Monica Athletics "A" Team crossed the line first in 50.35 seconds.

In the field, Jahmai Maura won the under-10 boys long jump with a leap of 3.20m (10' 6"), Benjamin Clarke won the under-16 boys high jump with his jump of 1.88m (6' 2"), and Brendon McPhee finished first in the under-12 ball throw with a toss of 30.59m (100' 4-1/4").
