Man shot dead two days after freed on bail

A man who was recently released on bail was shot and killed on Saturday, a short distance from where his father was murdered six years ago, relatives said.

They identified him as Mark Daniels Jr., 21. Police said the victim, who was being electronically monitored, was walking on Ferguson Street near Dumping Ground Corner in Bain Town around 5 p.m. when a champagne colored Toyota Harrier jeep, with two men inside, sped up next to him.

The men jumped out of the jeep and shot the victim multiple times. They then returned to the vehicle and sped off, police said. Police said the jeep, which was reported stolen on March 2, was found a short while later on Meeting Street.

Daniels was released on bail last Thursday, his grand aunt Lena Williams told The Guardian on Sunday.

But it was unclear what offense he was charged with. Williams admitted that Daniels was not perfect, but said he was still loved by all who knew him.

"Yeah, he has his ways and he likes company," she said at her home, not too far from where Daniels was killed. "He was in problems. He was awaiting his trial." Williams said she was sitting in her living room when she heard the gunshots that killed her grand nephew. "I was here sitting down ... and I heard the shots and I tried to get up and close the door," she said. "One of the aunts from in the back called for her boy and I said he went down the road. "Somebody came to me and said little Mark was the one who got shot. All I could do was put my hand on my head and holler. Only God knows, darling." Williams said Daniels' father's death was hard on the family.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Stephen Dean said police are trying to curb the trend of people being released on bail and then murdered. "What we have realized is this disturbing trend of persons who have been recently released on bail; they are becoming victims of homicide," he said at the scene. This was the 38th murder recorded for the year so far.

Police are also investigating the stabbing death of a man on Long Island, which happened on Thursday and the murder of a man in New Providence on Friday.
