A retired Canadian doctor, who was stabbed to death on Long Island last Thursday, was a kind and humorous man, his grandson said yesterday.

Jamie Pruckl, who identified his grandfather as Geoffrey Harding, 88, said he was one of the funniest men he knew. Pruckl said Harding, who was a well known doctor in British Columbia, Canada, retired a few years ago and was building his vacation home in Clarence Town, Long Island.

"It's kind of sickening," he said of the murder.

"He's not the kind of guy that's rude to anyone.

There's nothing mean or rude about him. I don't see why anyone would ever do this."

According to police, Harding was found stabbed to death in his home in Clarence Town shortly before noon.

On Saturday, police arrested a 43-year-old man in connection with the murder.

Police said the suspect was also wanted in connection with another house break-in on the island. Harding had four daughters and two stepdaughters, his grandson said. Relatives were in Long Island yesterday assisting police.

Two other men, recently released on bail, were murdered in New Providence in separate incidents over the holiday weekend, police said. They were both 21 years old.

Thirty-eight murders have been recorded in the country so far this year.
