An alleged drug lord fighting extradition to Florida on drug charges has been denied bail.

Senior Justice Stephen Isaacs on Thursday refused bail for Melvin Maycock Sr., the alleged head of the Caribbean arm of a multinational drug trafficking network. Maycock has recently completed serving a four-year sentence in relation to the seizure of $1.2 million in marijuana. He committed the offense as police were seeking him in connection with the extradition.

Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Neil Brathwaite objected to bail on the basis that Maycock would likely reoffend if freed.

Last September, former Senior Justice Jon Isaacs approved the extradition request for Maycock Sr., Trevor Roberts, Devroy Moss, Shanto Curry, brothers Lynden Deal and Bryan Deal, Torrey Lockhart, Wilfred Ferguson, Derek Rigby, Carl Culmer, Sheldon Moore and Gordon "Hog" Newbold. He quashed an extradition order for Maycock's son, Melvin Maycock Jr., and Laron Lockhart.

The evidence in support of the extradition requests flowed from wire tap intercepts and the evidence of un-indicted co-conspirators. The Privy Council in April ruled that the Listening Devices Act, the governing legislation for wire taps, is constitutional.

The U.S. government requested the men's extradition in 2004. However, the extradition hearing proceeded in fits and starts before then Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell, as lawyers for the fugitives filed multiple constitutional motions.
