A man who was killed during a double shooting on Wednesday night was on bail for a serious offense, police said yesterday.

The victim, identified as Alfred Munnings, 27, was shot in the upper body while Christopher Davis, 30, was shot in the leg, police said.

Davis was taken to hospital and was in stable condition up to yesterday.

Munnings died on the scene. Superintendent BK Bonamy said investigators were not sure whether he was the intended target.

Both men were sitting in a yard on West Avenue, off Carmichael Road, when a gunman attacked them around 9 p.m.

When The Guardian arrived on the scene, Munnings was lying on his back on a porch.

Following the shooting, police said they engaged in a high-speed chase with the man believed to be the shooter, and three others in a white Honda.

The chase ended on Tonique Williams-Darling Highway after the car crashed into a police vehicle. Bonamy said yesterday police had four men in custody.

"We don't have a motive at this time," he said. "We will speak to persons here and we ask for members of the public to assist us."

Munnings' murder brought the national count up to 31 for the year.

Murders in The Bahamas have increased by 35 percent, according to The Nassau Guardian's record. This same time last year there were 23 murders.

Munnings' murder came days after another man who was on bail for a serious offense died after he was shot on Saturday morning.

Officers responded to sounds of gunshots on Meadow Street, off Baillou Hill Road, shortly before 3 a.m.

When police arrived, they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said he was taken to hospital where he died at 10:30 a.m.

Minister of National Security Dr. Bernard Nottage said last month the Christie administration was looking to bring on more police officers.

"There are some of us who believe that the most important feature of a police force in terms of being able to prevent a crime from occurring is to have the boots on the ground," he said.

"...We're going to need a lot more [police officers] in New Providence."
