Thu, Mar 19th 2015, 01:47 PM

This week is Forestry Awareness Week, and the Bahamas National Trust (BNT) is celebrating in several ways at various national parks throughout The Bahamas. Events kicked off at the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve in Eleuthera and will end with a family fun day on Saturday at Primeval Forest National Park to wrap it all up.

“We wanted to start off Forestry Awareness Week here at the Preserve by reaching out to the youth,” said Leon Levy Preserve Manager, Falon Cartwright. “To kick off the celebrations, I visited two schools in Eleuthera, and presented on the native trees which can be found in Bahamian forests. After the presentation I joined the students in planting native trees at their schools.”

The presentations were just the first in a week-long celebration. Cartwright will be visiting more schools to teach about Bahamian forests and native plants, and the BNT will join the government in celebrating Forestry Awareness Week throughout The Bahamas. There will be a selfie competition themed “The Tree and Me”, a symposium at the College of The Bahamas on Wednesday, March 18th, various TV and radio appearances and a documentary screening on the history of forestry in The Bahamas at the Retreat on Village Road on Saturday, March 21st at 7pm. For more information about these forestry week activities visit the Bahamas Forestry Facebook page

Most importantly, the BNT encourages everyone to celebrate Forestry Week by joining them at Primeval Forest National Park, off Frank Watson Highway, this Saturday for a family fun day from 10am – 4pm. The family fun day also celebrates a year of the newest national park being open and will feature trail tours, scavenger hunts, Bahamian music, great food and much more.

The Saturday event is FREE for BNT members and children under 12, with an entrance fee of $5 for adults and $3 for children over 12. Of course, this is a perfect time to become a BNT member and support the twenty - seven national parks that protect the beauty of The Bahamas.
