NASSAU, Bahamas - Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham has asked banks to accept money for a public Haiti fund.
Prime Minister Ingraham said the government has asked Clearing Banks (see list below) to accept donations into a special account for Emergency and Reconstruction Assistance to Haiti.
Ingraham said the funds will go to the Haitian Government or international relief agencies operating in Haiti.
The Prime Minister said the government will "seek to ensure that donated funds reach the agency best able to assist the largest number of Haitian victims of the earthquake".
Ingraham did not say how the government would evaluate this but said he will outline The Bahamas' contribution to Haiti "in due course".
Today the Prime Minister is heading to Santo Domingo to meet with President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Antonio Fernández Reyna, and other national leaders to discuss coordination of medium and long-term assistance to Haiti.
President Preval of Haiti has been invited to the meeting as well as the Prime Ministers of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and Dominica (current Chair of Caricom), senior representatives of the Spanish Government, Secretary General of Caricom and the Ambassadors of the United States, Canada and France resident in Santo Domingo.
Bahamian delegates joining the Prime Minister are National Security Minister Tommy Turnquest, Director of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Captain Stephen Russell and Senior Policy Adviser in the Office of the Prime Minister, Teresa Butler.
