Haiti Earthquake: How Bahamians Can Help

NASSAU, Bahamas - In the aftermath of the earthquake that has left at least 72,000 dead, Bahamians are reaching out to help Haiti.

Here are a few of the ways that Bahamians can send help:

The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church

  • The Bahamas Conference of the Methodist Church aims to ship items to Haiti, fly in work teams and emergency supplies, and directly support the work of the United Methodist Committee On Relief (UMCOR), who is already on the ground and active within Haiti.
  • A Donation Day is scheduled to take place at Queen’s College on Saturday, January 16
  • Donations can be mailed to Bahamas Methodist Habitat, P.O.Box S.S. 5103 or contact the BCMC Office and they will collect your donation: 393-3726 or 393-2355
  • Email: bcmc@bahamasmethodist.org.
  • Direct bank deposits can also be made to Methodist Habitat, Royal Bank of Canada, Mackey Street Branch (Branch#05715) Account#1284553.

Rotary International

  • Rotary International is collecting blankets and non-expired medication
  • The agency is organising a flight into Port-au-Prince from Nassau on Friday
  • Drop blankets and non-expired medication to Windermere Harbour Bay or Windermere Caves Village

The New Providence Community Centre

  • Seeking donations of money, medical supplies and medical services
  • Accepting cheques at the NPCC
  • Cheques should be made payable to NPCC, with the note 'Haiti Earthquake Relief'
  • Working with the Del Camino Network and World Relief, which has churches in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and is co-ordinating a relief effort

The Salvation Army

  • Working with Salvation Army associations in Haiti
  • Asking medical personnel to volunteer services and assist on a mission trip to Haiti
  • To make a donation call the Salvation Army headquarters at 393-2745 or visit their offices in Mackey Street or Grants Town.

Red Cross Bahamas Society

  • Accepting donations of goods to send to Inagua where they anticipate an influx of Haitians fleeing the disaster zone
  • Canned foods, baby formula, blankets, towels, clothing, medical supplies, will all be accepted gratefully
  • Donations should be taken to the Red Cross Bahamas Society centre on John F. Kennedy Drive or taken to Quality Auto Sales on East Shirley Street, or Le Petit Gourmet cafe in the Shirley Street Plaza

Bahamas Christian Council

  • The Bahamas Christian Council is encouraging all churches to accept donations of goods and money to be sent to those in need via NEMA

The College of The Bahamas

  • The College of The Bahamas has a drop box for the Red Cross and has asked all students and staff to donate at least two items

Haitian Bahamian Society in Grand Bahama

  • President of the Haitian Bahamian Society president Jetta Baptiste is accepting donations at Jetta's Multi-Service Centre, 37 Hearne Lane, Freeport
  • Ms Baptiste met with church and business leaders in Freeport yesterday to assess ways of sending relief to Haiti and hopes to send a team this weekend.
