Tue, Mar 3rd 2015, 03:13 PM

Grand Bahama’s 6th annual International Women’s Day celebration, “Join Me on the Bridge”, will be held on the Labyrinth at the Garden of the Groves on Sunday, March 8th 2015 at 3 P.M. Attendees of this social event will enjoy guest speakers, music, art and refreshments. They will sign the Women’s Celebration banner and join together “On The Bridge” in the peaceful surroundings of the Garden.

The special guest speaker is Alicia Wallace from Nassau.

Lynette McInnes, who has organized the Grand Bahama event since its inception in 2010 says, “This year’s event theme is ‘Inspiring Women’, and I have no doubt that Alicia Wallace will do just that! She’s such an accomplished and well-spoken young woman who’s active in women’s rights and equality and basically fits the bill to a T.”

Alicia Wallace, a women's rights activist, is a writer and blogger, Director of Hollaback! Bahamas, Co-founder of Coalition to End Gender-based Violence & Discrimination, Youth Ambassador for The Bahamas on Sexual Violence, and winner of the Queen's Young Leaders Award working toward gender equality.

“I’m excited to be part of this year’s ‘Join Me on the Bridge’, as it’s very much in sync with my own initiatives as a women's rights activist and someone who’s passionate about public education, community engagement, and the empowerment of women and girls,” Alicia Wallace said. “The event’s essay and art competition, in particular, is inspiring as it engages our youth, something close to my heart.”

In the hopes of inspiring young women and men to celebrate women’s achievements and explore and reflect on women’s rights and equality, “Join Me on the Bridge” recently announced its 3rd Annual Essay Competition and Art Competition for Grand Bahama High School Students (Grades 10-13). Students were asked to either write an original essay around the question, “What woman has inspired you and why?”, or to create an original work of art around the theme “Inspiring Women.” The winners will be included in the event opening ceremony on March 8th, where they will receive their awards, read their essays and display their art.
