Continuing to captivate audiences everywhere through award-winning content that reflects some of today’s most relevant events, HBO announces the exclusive premiere of the The HBO Documentary Films presentation The Case Against 8 on Monday, March 2nd, at 21:00hrs. AST* in the Carribean.

Winner of the Directing Award in the U.S. Documentary category at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and the SXSW Audience Award in the Festival Favorites category, the film takes an in-depth look at one of the most controversial legal cases during the first decade of the 21st century: the legal efforts to overturn Proposition 8, the amendment seeking to eliminate the constitutional rights of marriage to same-sex couples in the state of California.

Despite having passed into law in 2008, the legality of marriage for same-sex couples was challenged when a coalition of conservative forces proposed a redefinition of marriage as an exclusive action between a man and a woman, which subsequently was approved. In response, two attorneys, once considered enemies, unexpectedly joined forces to passionately defend marriage equality. Conservative Ted Olsen and liberal David Boies represented two same-sex couples, basing their argument on the right all couples have to love each other. Filming over a five-year span with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, The Case Against 8 analyzes the strategies and tactics used by Olson and Boies to create an emotional account of the fight for marriage equality.

The documentary takes audiences from the District Court in San Francisco until it reached the U.S. Supreme Court, where Olson and Boies masterfully built a case with testimony from an army of experts, effecting the last minute reversal that changed the course of the trial.

The Case Against 8 is directed and produced by Ben Cotner and Ryan White, co-produced by Rebekah Fergusson and Jessica Lawsom, with associate producer Carin Bortz; edited by Kate Amend, with associate editor Helen Kearns and music by Blake Neely; and for HBO, supervising producer Sara Bernstein and executive producer Sheila Nevins.
