New Providence native Nashad Mackey is making the most of his senior year at the Champagnat Catholic School in Hialeah, Florida.
This past weekend, the 6-foot-5 small forward helped the Champagnat Lions capture the 2014 AROD classic title, and was named 'Athlete of the Week' by the Miami Herald for his 35-point, 11 rebound performance in the tournament's semifinal game against Miami Christian High School.
The Lions went on to win that game 62-59, and also the championship game the following day against Coral Springs Christian High School 46-43.
Mackey and the Lions managed to come from behind in the final game after trailing the entire contest. With the game close and 15 seconds left on the clock, Mackey hit a pair of clutch free throws to seal things up and secure the AROD title.
The 220-pound senior finished that game with a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. He also chipped in on the defensive end with five steals and a block.
The Lions now have a win/loss record of 11-0 on the season, and will be in action again on December 29 when they take on the Sunset High School Knights.
Mackey, who is the captain of this year's Lions squad, has a national ranking of 541 and is ranked number 23 in the state of Florida.
Mackey is a former C.R. Walker High School student. And although he is having a strong year on the court, he has not committed to play at any college as yet.
Champagnat Catholic School is a private school with campuses in Miami and Hialeah, Florida, United States. Established in 1968, the schools serve approximately 430 students in prekindergarten through grade 12.
Due to the school's small size, they play out of the 2A Division. The National Private Schools Accreditation Alliance (NPSAA) accredits the school.
