Former Senator, the Hon. Lawrence Hugo Glinton was laid to rest on Thursday, December 18. A state-recognized funeral was held at St. Mary the Virgin Anglican Church on Virginia Street. In attendance was Prime Minister, the Right Hon. Perry G. Christie who said that Senator Glinton was an ‘outstanding' Bahamian’ and a good man who served this country well.

“Senator Glinton was a good Bahamian who never wavered or even blinked in the furtherance of his political commitment to assist in the progress of this country, which he loved so much,” said Prime Minister Christie. “I knew him, I respected him and I admired him.”

Mr. Christie expressed gratitude to the late Senator’s family and said that he brought expressions of condolences on behalf of the government and the Bahamian people.

Also paying a tribute to Senator Glinton was leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, who called the Senator one of the ‘original freedom fighters’ for the country. Dr. Minnis reminisced fondly of his encounters with the Senator and said that he would be sadly missed by the Free National Movement party.

Senator Glinton was born on 9th September 1931 in Nassau to Ms. Althea Mortimer and Mr. Harry Glinton. He received his early education at the Western Junior and Senior Schools and graduated from the Government High School. Mr. Glinton was a historian, avid photographer and collector of exotic fish but his deepest passion was politics. In 1970, he was among the group of PLPs, led by Sir Cecil Wallace-Whitfield, who became known as the ‘freedom fighters.’ He was also one of the founding fathers of the Free National Movement. In l992, after the FNM’s success at the polls, he was appointed to the Upper House serving as a Senator from l992 to l997. During that time, he also served as Chairman of the New Providence Housing commission and was appointed Meritorious Council member of the FNM.
