Georgetown Grabs Thrilling OT Win Over Florida In Battle 4 Atlantis

There are still eight chances for this year’s Battle 4 Atlantis to produce a more exciting game than the one Georgetown and Florida provided late Wednesday night. But that one will be mighty hard to top.

D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera drained an 18-footer with five seconds left in overtime to give Georgetown a 66-65 victory over the Gators. It was the fourth lead change in the final 50 seconds of OT.

“I was thinking (I needed) to get to my spot, to where I was comfortable on the floor,” said Smith-Rivera, who finished with a game-high 17 points. “And that’s where I ended up getting to.” For the game, there were 21 lead changes and 10 ties. The biggest lead over the final 16 minutes of regulation and in overtime was a mere four points.

“It felt like the middle of the season, the end of the season,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. “That was two teams going back and forth with each other.” The Hoyas (4-0) led 30-22 late in the first half, but Florida (2-2) closed the half with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 31-27. That set the tone for an absolutely riveting second half. A 3-pointer by Eli Carter put the Gators on top 38-37. Georgetown went ahead 42-40.

Florida went back on top 43-42. The Hoyas regained the lead at 45-44 and actually stayed in front for more than three minute before Florida battled back for a 53-51 lead. Finally a jumper by Smith-Rivera tied the score at 53 and sent the game into overtime, much to the delight of the boisterous crowd that was enjoying the spectacle.

The Hoyas gained a bit of separation with a 3-pointer by Paul White that gave them a 60-56 lead with two minutes left in overtime, but Florida scrambled back to within 61-60 at the one-minute mark.Carter then stole the ball and flipped it ahead to Dorian Finney-Smith for an open layup, putting Florida back in front 62-61 with 48 seconds left. L.J. Peak answered for Georgetown with a 3-pointer, making the score 64-62.

It appeared the Gators might have delivered the knockout blow when Kasey Hill drove the lane for a layup, was fouled and made the ensuing free throw, giving Florida a 65-64 lead with only 11.5 seconds left. But all that did was set up Smith-Rivera’s last-second heroics.

“It was tough,” said Florida center Jon Horford, who finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. “We were playing against high-level competition, and we can’t assume we had it won. … You have to play to the end, have to be more intense.”

Georgetown now has the challenge of taking on No. 2 Wisconsin in a game scheduled to start only 15 hours after this one ended. When asked about the prospect of playing the Badgers on such a short turnaround, Thompson said, “It’s difficult to prepare for Wisconsin on a long turnaround.”
