NASSAU, The Bahamas - If anyone is going to love playing in dirt, it's kids! That's why Bahamas Waste really loves school visits as young children seem to embrace their work and are keen future recyclers.
In late October and early November Bahamas Waste hosted both fourth grade students from St. Andrew's and students from Columbus Primary to a tour of their facilities. "The tour was enlightening and of high interest for our students," said Sonia Storr, Guidance Counselor at Columbus Primary. "We appreciate the fact that Bahamas Waste has always supported our efforts in exposing our students to the various job options in the waste management business. The staff at Bahamas Waste were extremely informative and patient with students and made the experience very enjoyable."
Students from both tours were taught about the numerous types of waste handled by Bahamas Waste, including solid, liquid, medical waste, bio-diesel and cardboard recycling. The students also participated in interactive games where they won prizes for answering questions on recycling and waste removal.
During their visit, all of the students were excited to see that the big pink truck was at the yard and both groups were able to take photos with the truck and learn about the importance of early cancer screening in addition to the importance of properly handling waste.
Karon Gordon, Operations Clerk at Bahamas Waste hosted the tours and commented on how pleased she was to facilitate the tours as the students were eager to learn about the facility in participate in the activities.
"Each year Bahamas Waste seeks to evolve in any way that they can, and four years ago, the thought of having school kids visit the compound emerged," noted Gordon. "From that point to now, we've hosted field trips as well as visited schools, showcasing the various waste streams of Bahamas Waste. I'm in my element whenever there's a chance to educate anyone about the work we do. I love kids and I think it is safe to say that they love me too. I try to make each encounter a memorable one and Bahamas Waste has created a platform that makes my task fun and exciting."
