Livingston "Broom" Bromwell will have a chance to live out a dream when he leaves on Friday for an exchange program at Ridley College in Ontario, Canada.
The two-sport star will be the second student from Noble Preparatory Academy (NPA) to participate in the exchange program between the two schools, the first being Shamar Burrows, who successfully completed the program and earned a full academic scholarship to the institution.
Ridley is one of the oldest private schools in Canada and has the largest boarding program in Ontario, with students representing over 35 countries.
Bromwell, who is one of the country's top high school basketball players, is also one of the top high jump athletes at the junior level as well. He says that he understands the magnitude of the opportunity and is looking to make the most of it.
"When I transition on Friday, I expect to be exposed to many things I have never encountered," he said. "I want to see the world from a different point of view and work on enhancing my character while maturing. Aside from sports, I'm really looking forward to the academic side of things as well. I want to see how I perform there, and I think with my work ethic I will be able to rise to the top."
"Broom" was a two-time member of The Bahamas' junior national basketball teams and CARIFTA track and field teams.
The 17-year-old added that although he may have a lean frame, he is more than ready to take on the physical challenges that he will meet on the court.
"I'm looking forward to finally playing the three (small forward) position, because, here in The Bahamas, once you're tall, they put you in the post," said Bromwell. "Coach [Geno] Bullard would put me in once in a while on the wing, but I look forward to consistently getting out on the wing. I played in a few AAU tournaments in the past and understand that it's tougher and some calls I won't get, but I'm ready for the challenge."
Bullard is one of the top basketball coaches in the country, and made the transition to academic administration when he started the school three years ago.
Bullard is also the international recruiter for the entire Caribbean region for Niagra College.
NPA has academic ties with Ridley, Niagra and Brock University.
"We are always looking to help young men in the country to not only play basketball at a higher level, but receive the highest levels of education as well," said Bullard. "It is all about creating a total package - a student that is confident in his education, confident in his athletic ability and to able to present his self in a professional manner."
Bullard credits the art of finding the balance between sports and education as the main reason for the exchange program's success.
"We already have a very successful relationship with them, from the days when my son graduated from there," Bullard said. "The trend of students we had participate in the school's exchange program laid the foundation, and them knowing the integrity and character that those students already had, once we were able to get our own institution in NPA, where we had an opportunity to design an entire program dedicated to creating a student athlete, things were able to take off."
