WEEK NINE
(Byes: Atlanta, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Tennessee)

Thursday's game
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers, 8:25 p.m.
It's hard to believe that as bad as the Saints started the season, they have a shot at sole possession of first place in the National Football Conference's (NFC) South division this week. Drew Brees has his security blanket back in Jimmy Graham back, Mark Ingram is running like a man possessed, and the Saints' offense is clicking again. I don't know if it would be wise going with them on a short week on the road though. The Saints already don't play well on the road, and doing it with little practice time against a divisional opponent will make the task even harder. The Panthers' defense has struggled this season, but so has the Saints on that side of the ball. I like Cam Newton to rally his troops in this key division game and lead Carolina to a big win.
Panthers 24, Saints 20

Sunday's games
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals, 1 p.m.
The Jags finally cracked the win column two weeks ago, but now they appear to be back to their losing ways. They're simply not on the same level as the Bengals right now. A.J. Green is set to return for the Bengals as well, so Andy Dalton will have his favorite target back. The Jags have one of the most underrated defensive fronts in the league, but they won't be able to pressure Dalton and the Bengals enough to have any effect against the passing game. The Bengals should win this game easily.
Bengals 31, Jaguars 16

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m.
There's just a half game separating first from worst in the American Football Conference's (AFC) North division. The Browns occupy that bottom spot, but could be in first place by the end of the day. That's how tight it is in that division. I expect them to remain competitive and make things tough for the Bengals, Ravens and Steelers. Meanwhile, the Bucs play in arguably the worst division in the league. It's so bad that at 1-6, they are just two games out of first place. They seem to have checked out on the season though. They couldn't beat the lowly Vikings at home last week, so I don't expect them to offer much of a threat to the Browns in the 'Dog Pound' this week.
Browns 23, Buccaneers 16

Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys, 1 p.m.
Who would have thought that these two teams would be playing for first place in the conference this late in the season. The Cards and Cowboys get together in what should be a thrilling contest in North Texas on Sunday. I don't think Tony Romo's sore back will keep him out of this one. The jury is out on how well he will play, but DeMarco Murray should take some of the load off of him with another strong effort on the ground. With over 1,000 yards on the ground so far, he's the front runner for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the season's midway point. I think Murray will extend his NFL record, rushing for 100-plus yards for a ninth straight game to open the season. The Cards are quite formidable, but I can't see the Cowboys losing two straight at home.
Cowboys 23, Cardinals 20

Philadelphia Eagles at Houston Texans, 1 p.m.
The Eagles are flying high. Even with that loss to the Cards last week, they're still on track to win the NFC East division and make some noise in the playoffs. They find themselves a half game behind the Cowboys, but I think the Eagles will eventually catch them and soar ahead. Nick Foles is clicking with his receivers and LaSean "Shady" McCoy is running the ball much better than he did at the beginning of the season. J.J. Watt and the Texans are never easy to beat, especially at home, but I like the Eagles to control this game on Sunday. I think they'll move the ball better on offense and limit Arian Foster and that Texans' offense just enough to come out with the win.
Eagles 24, Texans 20

N.Y. Jets at Kansas City Chiefs, 1 p.m.
I might not pick the Jets any more for the rest of the season. Seriously! As much as I would like for him to do well, Geno Smith is simply not "cutting the mustard" in New York. Smith's three first-quarter interceptions last week was as low as it gets. Michael Vick came in and was atrocious himself. The Jets are struggling. I think the Chiefs will dominate this game from start to finish and send the reeling Jets to an eighth straight loss.
Chiefs 34, Jets 16

San Diego Chargers at Miami Dolphins, 1 p.m.
With a lot of teams bunched up in the AFC, I think that this game will go a long way in determining which team makes a serious run at the playoffs. Phillip Rivers was looking like the early season favorite for MVP but he has slipped a bit in recent weeks. He's now the league's third rated passer behind Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. Rivers is still having a great season, but he usually struggles in Miami. Additionally, the Dolphins have the third best defense in the league against the pass. I think the Miami heat will be too much for Rivers and the Chargers on Sunday. The Dolphins' secondary has produced some big plays in recent weeks and this week I think they'll be up to the task against Rivers and the Chargers.
Dolphins 27, Chargers 19

Washington Redskins at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.
All signs point to RG3 (Robert Griffin III) being back and starting for the Redskins this week. As well as Colt McCoy has played, this is RG3's team and when healthy he will play. His coach Jay Gruden has already said that. Whether he plays or not, I think the 'Skins will handle the Vikes though. As well as McCoy played last week, maybe the Redskins should start him and rest RG3 for another week. I don't think Teddy Bridgewater and the Vikes will be able to generate enough offense to contend with the Redskins. They're near the bottom of the league in scoring, averaging just over 17 points per game. Coming off a big win over the Cowboys, a rejuvenated Redskins team will head into the TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Sunday and leave with a big win.
Redskins 28, Vikings 20

St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers, 4:05 p.m.
How could I possibly go against a Niners team coming off a bye week, at home, and against a divisional opponent? The answer to that is simple: I can't! The Niners' defense is getting stronger by the day, and led by the arm and legs of Colin Kaepernick, the offense is turning in big plays. The Niners is definitely the more superior team in this match-up. I think their defense will lead the way against the pesky Rams. Austin Davis and company won't be able to get much going in this one. Besides, if the Niners have any hopes of making the playoffs, they certainly can't afford to lose games like this.
49ers 26, Rams 17

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots, 4:25 p.m.
Game of the Week! Brady against Peyton is always must-see TV, and this one in Foxborough on Sunday will be no different. With the way Tom Brady and the Pats dissected the Bears' secondary last week, I'm almost compelled to go with them in this match-up but one has to remember that the Bears' defense is banged up. Led by Aquib Talib who will be looking to have a strong game against the team that gave up on him, the Broncos' secondary is much better. Additionally, Peyton Manning and the offense is more than capable of matching any output by the Pats. The last time Peyton and the Broncos visited Foxborough, they blew a 24-0 halftime lead. I expect for them to be focussed for all four quarters in this one.
Broncos 37, Patriots 31

Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks, 4:25 p.m.
The Super Bowl Champs appear to be back on track, and now they're back at CenturyLink Field in Seattle where they own one of the best home field advantages in the league. The Raiders are still looking for their first win, but they won't get it in Seattle. They still have a long way to go. I think rookie quarterback Derek Carr will struggle against the "Legion of Boom" defense. On offense, Seattle will get back to fierce running with Marshawn Lynch and re-establish their identity. It will be more than enough for them to get past the Raiders.
Seahawks 26, Raiders 13

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers, 8:30 p.m.
The winner of this game could find themselves in first place in the AFC North at the end of the day. When the Ravens and Steelers get together, it's always a physical battle, and I don't expect this one to be any different. I have a feeling this one will be won though the air though. Which combination will be more lethal - Joe Flacco to Steve Smith Sr. or Ben Roethlisberger to Antonio Brown? The latter was more potent last week as "Big Ben" passed for over 500 yards for the second time in his career and Brown had 10 catches for 133 yards and two scores, but I doubt they'll be able to duplicate that, especially with that Ravens' pass rush hounding Roethlisberger all day. I think the Ravens will be the more consistent team in this one and find a way to get the "W". Somehow, I don't think they'll lose two key divisional games back-to-back.
Ravens 27, Steelers 24

Monday's game
Indianapolis Colts at N.Y. Giants, 8:30 p.m.
The Colts' defense took a beating from "Big Ben" and the Steelers last week, and coming off a bye, Eli Manning and the G-Men will be looking to inflict more pain. The only problem is the Giants don't have the weapons that the Steelers have. Victor Cruz is done for the season, and rookie wideout Odell Beckham won't be able to handle the load by himself. Meanwhile, the Colts' offense is still legit. In fact, Andrew Luck is leading the league in passing yards, on pace to exceed 5,000 yards for the first time in his brief career. I think Luck will outshine Eli in this one. I expect for him to surpass the 300-yard passing mark again and lead Indy to the win in this primetime affair.
Colts 33, Giants 23

WEEK SEVEN: 11-4
OVERALL: 70-35-1

WEEK NINE
(Byes: Atlanta, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Tennessee)
Well, Week Nine is here and that means the playoff picture is taking shape. Some teams will gain ground in the race while others will lose it and fall back to the pack. Last week was rife with trap games, and this week has its share. I'm keeping it short and simple again this week. Oh, and yes my Cowboys finally lost one. If we had left Brandon Weeden in with 2:39 left instead of bringing an injured Tony Romo back, Weeden would have led us to the game-winning field goal in regulation. I'm just saying. Anyway, buckle up... here we go.

Thursday's game
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers, 8:25 p.m.
Drew Brees and Mark Ingram protect the weak Saints' defense with big offensive games. Carolina is at home but the defense is a shell of the dominant unit from last year. The Saints will win big on the road.
Saints 31, Panthers 23

Sunday's games
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals, 1 p.m.
A.J. Green returns for Cincy who is playing at home. No brainer here as the Bengals win big at home.
Bengals 34, Jaguars 17

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m.
The Browns win at home in a close one.
Browns 23, Buccaneers 17

Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys, 1 p.m.
Battle of six-win first place teams here. If Tony Romo goes, the Cards will blitz all day in attempt to re-injure Romo's sore back. The Cards' secondary is full of injuries and is suspect at best. Look for the Cowboys to do what they do, which is run DeMarco Murray, protect Romo or Brandon Weeden and set up the play action passes. I think Dez Bryant and the rest of the Cowboys' receivers will have a monster day against the Cards' secondary. I also see Carson Palmer making this one interesting along with Larry Fitzgerald and Andre Ellington. In the end, in a dog fight, the Cowboys will win at home.
Cowboys 24, Cardinals 20

Philadelphia Eagles at Houston Texans, 1 p.m.
J.J. Watt and the Texans' defence will make it hard for Nick Foles and the Eagles to function. Arian Foster will have a big game as well, running out the clock late to save a big win for the Texans.
Texans 23, Eagles 20

N.Y. Jets at Kansas City Chiefs, 1 p.m.
The Chiefs will win big as the Jets crash on the road.
Chiefs 27, Jets 17

San Diego Chargers at Miami Dolphins, 1 p.m.
The dreaded 1 p.m. east coast early start has proven to be a thorn in the Chargers' side over recent seasons. This Sunday proves to be no different. The Dolphins will get a big home win against a good San Diego team.
Dolphins 27, Chargers 20

Washington Redskins at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.
Coin flip here. The Vikings should win at home.
Vikings 24, Redskins 20

St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers, 4:05 p.m.
San Fran gets some much need support on the defensive end with the return of Aldon Smith. Couple that with playing at home against a feisty but injury-riddled Rams' squad, and I like the Niners as Colin Kaepernick does a lot of biceps kissing.
49ers 24, Rams 20

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots, 4:25 p.m.
Classic duel between two AFC rivals in the making here. Points will go up in bunches but I like Tom Brady over Peyton Manning in this one.
Patriots 34, Broncos 31

Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks, 4:25 p.m.
No brainer part two. The Seahawks will win at home.
Seahawks 34, Raiders 20

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers, 8:30 p.m.
"Big Ben" will put up numbers, just not gaudy like last week. This is a classic rivalry in the AFC North and just how the Bengals have the Ravens number this season, the Ravens have the Steelers number, at home or on the road. Obie Roberts, you and your terrible towel go back in hiding. Your Steelers are going down.
Ravens 27, Steelers 24

Monday's game
Indianapolis Colts at N.Y. Giants, 8:30 p.m.
This should be an entertaining game, but something tells me the Colts will pull this one out on the road late. Andrew Luck to T.Y. Hilton will be the order of the day with some Ahmad Bradshaw thrown in to bruise his old team.
Colts 31, Giants 23

OVERALL: 76-44-1

WEEK NINE
(Byes: Atlanta, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Tennessee)

Thursday's game
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers, 8:25 p.m.
It's surprising to see two playoff teams from the NFC South last year struggling to get to .500 at this point of the season. Seeing how bad the division is this year, this game will hold some big implications down at the conclusion of the season. I believe the Saints will build off its strong win in Green Bay and take advantage of a reeling Carolina team that can't seem to get on track. Drew Brees will have a stellar performance and New Orleans' defense will be disruptive and force Cam Newton to make some costly mistakes. It could be a close game, but I'm taking the road team to pull it out.
Saints 24, Panthers 17

Sunday's games
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals, 1 p.m.
Cincinnati's last-minute win showed a lot of character and resolve. I don't see them dropping a very winnable game against a Jaguars team that is outmatched in this contest. With the AFC North race tightening up, the Bengals won't drop a game that can prove costly down the road.
Bengals 27, Jaguars 13

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m.
The Browns can ill-afford to lose traction in the AFC North as well and as much as this game seems like a trap game, playing at home will greatly work in their favor. A balanced attack will get the job done for Cleveland.
Browns 20, Buccaneers 10

Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys, 1 p.m.
With Tony Romo's status uncertain for Sunday, this game looks like another week where Dallas comes back down to Earth. DeMarco Murray and the Cowboys' offensive line will have their hands full against the third ranked run defense, and I believe the Cardinals front seven will be up to the task. If Romo is ready to go or not, I expect Arizona to go to "Jerry World" and play some outstanding football on both sides on the ball. Carson Palmer will have a steady game and I believe Arizona will pull off a tough win in the heart of Texas.
Cardinals 23, Cowboys 17

Philadelphia Eagles at Houston Texans, 1 p.m.
Philly's 21st ranked run defense meets Houston's fifth ranked rushing attack, while Houston's 28th ranked pass defense has a date with Philly's sixth ranked passing offense. The deeper an NFL season gets into its campaign the more important the ground attack will become, and I believe the Texans will rely on Arian Foster to carry the load on Sunday and punish the Eagles' front seven. Houston can build some momentum with a win in this game, and I think they will pull off the upset.
Texans 26, Eagles 23

N.Y. Jets at Kansas City Chiefs, 1 p.m.
An interesting storyline for this game is Michael Vick's debut as the starter for New York on Sunday against the head coach that resurrected his career in Philly, Andy Reid. However, I doubt that Vick's role as a starter will change the outcome of this game because the Chiefs are playing some really good football. I'm happy for Vick getting a chance on Sunday, but I don't think he has a chance in Kansas City.
Chiefs 24, Jets 14

San Diego Chargers at Miami Dolphins, 1 p.m.
The Dolphins are back home, so that means they are due for a routine, head-scratching home loss. The Chargers are looking to rebound from two tough games against division opponents and I believe Phillip Rivers will lead the way in ensuring his team doesn't drop three straight. Miami has been playing considerably better over the past few weeks, but some things are too good to be true - such as a three-game winning streak for them.
Chargers 31, Dolphins 21

Washington Redskins at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.
Robert Griffin III will finally return to the gridiron and it should finally (or hopefully) end the questions about who's the best quarterback for the Redskins. If Washington can play inspired football like they did on Monday night against the Cowboys then I believe they will be the better team on Sunday against the Vikings. I think they will do just that. I don't expect "RG3" to have a huge game in his return, but a solid performance from him coupled with a strong defensive showing will be enough to win on the road.
Redskins 28, Vikings 17

St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers, 4:05 p.m.
I don't expect this division game to be a blowout, but I firmly believe the 49ers will be fully prepared for the Rams after having a bye week to prepare. San Fran's defense will make a statement at home and I believe Colin Kaepernick will play a mistake-free game on the ground and through the air. The 49ers usually get stronger around this time of year and I don't expect this season to be any different.
49ers 33, Rams 10

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots, 4:25 p.m.
As football fans, we have to appreciate these last few contests between Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as they're in the twilight of their respective careers even though they aren't playing like it. This could very well be a preview of the AFC Championship game, but I'll enjoy this contest for what it is. As much as I would like to break down how and why the winner of this game will do so, I'll refrain from it and pray for another classic duel between Brady and Manning. However, I believe New England will defend its home turf and play a few notches better than Denver to win this game. I won't feel bad about losing this pick, just enjoy the greatness on display.
Patriots 34, Broncos 31

Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks, 4:25 p.m.
Seattle is home to one of the best coffee brands in the world called Seattle's Best Coffee. It's some really amazing coffee to say the least. Oakland better get as much as they can while in Seattle, because they certainly won't be leaving with anything else besides a loss after they play the Seahawks.
Seahawks 42, Raiders 7

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers, 8:30 p.m.
This rematch from earlier in the season should prove to be a good one and I believe the Steelers will be up to the task this time at Heinz Field. Antonio Brown is playing as good as any receiver in the league right now and Ben Roethlisberger is starting to heat up. As stout as Baltimore has been this season, sweeping a team in the AFC North is a tall task, especially when your division is arguably the best in football right now. I believe Joe Flacco will keep this game close, but I see the Steelers grinding out this game and squeezing out a tight victory.
Steelers 21, Ravens 17

Monday's game
Indianapolis Colts at N.Y. Giants, 8:30 p.m.
Andrew Luck is a great quarterback, and he is playing as good as any quarterback in the league right now. However, I believe Eli Manning and the G-men will be very prepared for this game coming off a bye week and force Luck to single-handedly beat them. Luck is certainly capable of doing that, but I believe New York will play a very strong game on Monday night and get a much needed win to keep pace in the NFC East. I predict this will be entertaining, but I see the Giants coming out on top.
Giants 27, Colts 20

WEEK NINE
(Byes: Atlanta, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, Tennessee)

Thursday's game
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers, 8:25 p.m.
I got the Saints in this one. After their performance in Week Eight, I think they understand that every loss places them further away from the wildcard race to enter the playoffs. Desperation has kicked in, and they will take this one.
Saints 23, Panthers 21

Sunday's games
Jacksonville Jaguars at Cincinnati Bengals, 1 p.m.
This is like a scrimmage game for the Bengals.
Bengals 23, Jaguars 6
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Cleveland Browns, 1 p.m.
The Buccaneers have failed to be competitive in most of their games. The Browns have done the opposite. They have fought hard, especially against big teams. The Browns will fight and win this one against a not so good team.
Browns 23, Buccaneers 13

Arizona Cardinals at Dallas Cowboys, 1 p.m.
The Cowboys showed signs of weakness in Week Eight against the Redskins, and the Cardinals will be ready to exploit their weaknesses. Tony Romo is hurting, and that is reason for the Cowboys to be worried about a mid-season slide.
Cardinals 24, Cowboys 23

Philadelphia Eagles at Houston Texans, 1 p.m.
The Eagles is a superior team to the Texans. Texans' quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has failed to get the ball in the hands of one of the top three receivers in the game. On the other side, Nick Foles is firing like Quick Draw McGraw.
Eagles 30, Texans 20

N.Y. Jets at Kansas City Chiefs, 1 p.m.
The Jets have serious issues. Geno Smith and Michael Vick have both been struggling. They better pray their running game produces 150 yards or more, but their backs won't do that against this Chiefs' defense.
Chiefs 27, Jets 16

San Diego Chargers at Miami Dolphins, 1 p.m.
The Dolphins have pulled it together. They look good on both sides of the ball. Philip Rivers is a slow moving quarterback. He will need to move around in order to avoid the front four on the Dolphins' defensive line, but immobility will prove to be disastrous for Rivers.
Dolphins 27, Chargers 20

Washington Redskins at Minnesota Vikings, 1 p.m.
Colt McCoy played a great game against the Cowboys, and I believe that confidence will spill over into this game if he gets the nod to start again. If the Redskins use that blitz against the Vikings, I doubt the Vikings will get double digits in this one.
Redskins 20, Vikings 9

St. Louis Rams at San Francisco 49ers, 4:05 p.m.
The 49ers have issues on offense, but that won't be a factor on Sunday against a mediocre Rams team.
49ers 20, Rams 16

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots, 4:25 p.m.
There will be no magical comeback for Tom Brady this time. Surgical Peyton Manning will take care of business.
Broncos 38, Patriots 20

Oakland Raiders at Seattle Seahawks, 4:25 p.m.
If the Raiders find a good coach, they will get a win or two. No wins happen against the NFL's elite.
Seahawks 28, Raiders 12

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers, 8:30 p.m.
The Steelers have kicked it into high gear. They have been playing lights out football. At home, I expect them to step up in a huge divisional rivalry.
Steelers 23, Ravens 20

Monday's game
Indianapolis Colts at N.Y. Giants, 8:30 p.m.
The Giants' defense will be instrumental in this one. If they can shut down the receivers and pressure Andrew Luck into making a bad decision or two, I think they will pull this one off in an upset.
Giants 28, Colts 27
