Taxi drivers and tour operators clash downtown

Taxi drivers and employees from a local tour company got into a heated dispute at the Prince George Dock yesterday morning.
Transport and Aviation Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin said yesterday that tensions had been brewing between the two groups for days.
A video was making the rounds on Facebook yesterday showing scores of reported taxi drivers and tour operators shoving each other at the Prince George Dock. One man was even threatening to strike a tour operator with a piece of wood. Hanna-Martin said she saw the video and brought it to the attention of the controller of the Road Traffic Department.
"It's embarrassing to the country," she said.
"I'm bringing all stakeholders to the table at the Prince George Dock to find out what the facts are and toget to the bottom of it," she said, adding that it appears as if there was some breach in policy.
"Based on what I know thus far, it is being alleged that the tour company is engaging in a form of soliciting which is not permitted by law," she said when contacted for comment.
"Whether that is the case or not, I will find out [today]."
She said she will meet with members from the Ministry of Tourism, the Road Traffic Department and the Prince George Dock Association this morning, where she hopes to be fully briefed on the issue.
Hanna-Martin said the tour company has a prearranged agreement where it collects a certain number of tourists from the Prince George Dock area. She said taxi drivers are alleging that the tour company is also soliciting tourists as well, which cuts into the drivers' pockets.
