Resorts World Bimini officials expect to receive a boost in visitors at the property after completing the first phase of its port facility.
Prime Minister Perry Christie and a delegation of Cabinet ministers traveled to the island yesterday for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
The construction of the controversial North Bimini Ferry Terminal was met with challenges, including push back from environmentalists.
Christie said the government will continue to assess the environmental impact as the resort completes the remaining phases of the facility.
He said the government is committed to the best environmental practices.
During the ceremony, the Bimini Superfast Ferry pulled into the pier with hundreds of visitors aboard.
The visitors, who traveled from Florida, were welcomed with a Junkanoo rush out.
Genting Group Chairman K.T. Lim said the Bimini Superfast will begin to cruise from Broward and Palm Beach counties in Florida as of September 18.
He said trips from Port Everglades will be available from October 14, in addition to the four trips per week the ferry already makes to and from Florida.
Lim said the resort's plans will benefit Bimini and its residents significantly.
Tourism Minister Obie Wilchcombe said since the resort opened last year, it has seen a 33 percent increase in hotel occupancy.
As a part of the resort's expansion, a new 300-room hotel will be completed in February 2015, according to officials.
Christie said 480 people are involved in its construction.
Once the expansion is completed the resort will employ more than 800 people, according to the prime minister.
Wilchcombe also announced that the Ministry of Labour is spearheading the establishment of a new administrative complex in Bimini.
It will include customs and immigration, a check-in counter and tourism desk and is set to be completed within six months.
It is unclear how much the new complex will cost.
The complex is intended to ease the burden and costs for residents in Bimini.
Christie also said the recently passed Gaming Bill will go a long way to expanding and modernizing the gaming industry and what World Resorts Bimini can do.
