Mon, Aug 18th 2014, 05:10 PM

Following the overwhelming success of the inaugural Bahamas Half in 2013, the Bahamas Roadmasters running club is set to launch the 2nd annual Bahamas Half. This event is being held on Sunday, November 23rd, 2014 and will feature the half marathon, half marathon 3-person relay and a 10K race. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Bahamas Special Olympics and be fun for all ages and skill levels including walkers and junior athletes.

The event starts and finishes at Arawak Cay. The internationally certified half marathon and 10km courses head West for an out and back route. There are multiple water and support stations along the course, manned by race volunteers and the RBDF and RBPF.

Registration is now open online at www.BahamasHalf.com and at all three Sports Center locations. The prizes will include $1,000 for the first Bahamian male and female in the half marathon, $500 for the overall male and female winners of the half marathon and $300 for the first relay team. In addition, all participants will receive a goody bag and after crossing the finish line on race day, a unique die cast finisher's medal and many other treats.

In 2013, 382 people participated in the event. Seventeen relay teams (making up 51 entrants) completed the 13.1 mile half marathon, and 160 persons completed it individually. 171 participants finished the 10km (6.2 mile) course. There were scores of volunteers and participants, with the COB Student Nurses' Association being out in full support.

To date, many persons have registered for the 2014 Bahamas Half, including persons from Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Maryland, California, Washington DC and across Canada including the Northwest Territories, British Columbia and Manitoba. The truly international event is expected to sell out as the race capacity is limited. Registration is currently discounted both online and at The Sports Center to encourage participants to sign up early.

Dr. Stephen Truszkowski will offer chiropractic services on race morning free of charge to all participants. The gear check will be secured by Armoured Car Services during the event. Many other sponsors will be on site and souse will be provided for race participants following their event.

The Bahamas Roadmasters Running Club (“BRRC”) established in 1990 is a non-profit group which promotes the sport of distance running and prepares runners to participate in half (13.1 miles) and full marathons (26.2 miles).

Members have participated in various marathons based in the United States and Canada as well as the marathon “majors” including London, New York, Berlin, Chicago, Tokyo and most recently the Boston Marathon. Experienced members regularly share training tips and provide mentoring at no cost to those who also share in the love of distance running.

In addition to its running pursuits the club has had the opportunity through its fundraising efforts over the years to make meaningful contributions to the community by its charitable donations to causes such as the AIDS Camp, AIDS Foundation, Ranfurly Home for Children, Pilot Club of Nassau pool project for the disabled, Cat Island Children’s Home and The Seahorse Institute.

The race timer, PROMPT (Paradise Race Organization Management Promotion & Timing) is a newly formed Bahamian company. The all Bahamian team has years of experience with organizing and timing racing events such as the Great Abaco Family Fitness Weekend and the 242 Colour Run. The Chronotrack system used to time this event is used throughout the world in major events, and will also be used in the upcoming Potcakeman Triathlon on September 20th.
