Twenty-two court reporters working on contract with the government may not become permanent workers once their agreement expires at the end of September, according to President of the Bahamas Public Service Union (BPSU) John Pinder.Pinder told The Nassau Guardian yesterday that the government continued the contract that the workers had entered into with LET Consultancy when it prematurely terminated the company's contract in December. The reporters were given termination letters last December by LET Consultancy, after the government canceled its contract nine months ahead of its expiration. The company's principal Ludell Theophilus was first awarded the contract in 1999.Pinder said there was an understanding that those workers would be considered for permanent positions. However, he said he just recently learned that contracted workers "are being advised that their contracts will be renewed for two years"."This was never agreed to by us. We expected them to be considered for permanent and pensionable status," Pinder said.He said another concern of the contracted workers is that they have been paid several days late since January. Pinder said he has asked the people responsible for payment to ensure that the reporters are paid at same time as other public service workers.
