Ingrown Toenails

Don’t be saddled this summer with painful ingrown toenails.

An ingrown toenail is when the nail curves inward and downward and grows into the skin causing irritation, redness, swelling and pain. If the ingrown nail breaks the skin, bacteria can enter and cause an infection.

Cause: There are many reasons that can lead to the development of an ingrown toenail. In many cases it is hereditary but it can also result from trauma, tight footwear and improper toenail trimming.

Treatment: In some cases, the situation can be corrected safely and easily at home using clean nail instruments. Please be aware, however, that repetitive nail trimming can cause the condition to worsen. Home care is also strongly discouraged if the area is infected because of the risk of spreading the infection. Another reason to seek professional care from a foot doctor is if you have a medical condition, like Diabetes or impaired circulation, which is concerning because it puts your feet at high risk.

When you seek care from a foot doctor, the prescribed foot treatment may include oral antibiotics and surgery (a simple in-office procedure to permanently remove the offending incurvated nail).

If you’re suffering from an ingrown toenail contact Dr. Kemp for painless and effective treatment.
