Paul Knowles, founding leader of Roots Junkanoo group, died at his home on Saturday after a long illness.
He was 62.
Knowles, an attorney by profession, was a founding partner of Knowles, McKay and Culmer law firm.
He was considered an icon in the Junkanoo community.
In a statement, Roots said he is credited with introducing remarkable designs and materials used in modern day Junkanoo.
"His Junkanoo career started with Future Shock, then he formed Force One and Premier Dancers, and then he moved to the esteemed Valley Boys and brought showmanship and his personal style to their performance," the group said.
"His beloved Roots Junkanoo group, which he helped form in 1990 with some other passionate Junkanooers, was the mechanism he used to display his supreme artistry and limitless ideas for professional and world class performance in Junkanoo; and Roots lives today through his legacy, a group known for competitive decorating."
The group added, "His contributions are limitless in so many arenas -- Bahamian culture and the development of a premier Junkanoo group, Roots, the Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, the legal fraternity of The Bahamas and our international law development.
"This strong leader, designer and family man will be missed greatly by all. His legacy will live on and will be enshrined within our organization."
Knowles is survived by his wife, Yvette; his mother, Annette; son, Obiama; brother, Dr. Ronald Knowles; sisters, Joan and Sonia and many other relatives and friends.
His death came nearly six months after the death of Valley Boys Leader Winston "Gus" Cooper.
