Forget letting the dogs out -- Baha Men will not be reigned in. After years of hitting the top notes with singles like "Who Let The Dogs Out", "Holla", "Best Years of Our Lives" and "Move It Like This" -- just to name a few in a storied career that spans decades -- the group's latest single "Night & Day" is one of 14 songs on the track list for "One Love, One Rhythm: The Official 2014 FIFA World Cup Album". Baha Men is just one of several world-renowned musical acts that have added their distinctive sounds to the rhythm of football's flagship event.
Baha Men is on the CD with the likes of Pitbull, Santana, Wyclef, Ricky Martin, Shakira and The Isley Brothers, among other artists from Brazil, a Norwegian-Spanish pop singer and a Canadian reggae-pop band. Baha Men's "Night & Day" is the 13th single on the 15-single CD. The deluxe edition includes an additional two bonus tracks. The World Cup CD was released in April.
"This is an accomplishment within itself because it did not have to be us," said Baha Men's leader Isaiah Taylor of the group's inclusion on the CD. "A number of other artists could have been chosen, but thank God it was us."
The three-minute, 54-second Carnival mix sound is about capturing the moments in life...the good moments in life. It's a song about a universal topic that everyone -- young and old -- can relate to.
"Night and Day" was recorded in Miami, Florida with Black Shadow Records and produced by Troyton Rami. The single was co-penned by Baha Men vocalists Rik Carey and Dyson Knight and Rami. Carey and Knight provide the vocals for the single that is pop based, but incorporates the Junkanoo elements that Baha Men has been known for including in their songs. On the single for World Cup compilation, there is a Brazilian genre incorporating the Carnival mix for the World Cup.
Baha Men's original single "Night and Day", which is on the "Ride with Me" album, set to be dropped between June and July, will have the original mastered mix that they did with Junkanoo.
Getting to the finished product of the "Night and Day" single was a process of elimination, according to Carey.
"When we were in the studio working on the song, first we got the track from the producer and we had two different songs that had totally nothing to do with this topic in mind. It was a process of elimination first of all. When we went to write for the third time, [we] totally cleaned the song out. Dyson had no clue as to what to do with a song like this anymore, so I let him and the producer step out of the studio for awhile, I took a stab at it for the third time, and came up with the hook and the pre-hook. After that it flowed like water."
Where Sony took it after that, and what their intention was after they recorded, Carey said he had no clue. But he said he knew that the song they had recorded had a festive feel, and a great vibe about a topic that is universal -- capturing the good moments in life -- something he said everyone, young and old, could relate to.
Knight said Sony took an interest in the song sometime ago, and put it up for consideration for the World Cup compilation. "Night and Day" made the cut over many other artists from around the world. While the Carnival mix from the World Cup CD compilation is already on the market, Baha Men's original version of the single will be released on Tuesday, May 27.
Baha Men is hoping to have copies to release to radio stations by Tuesday so that the song can get into the airtime rotation
"I'm just excited about 'Night and Day'... I'm excited about everything that's happening with the band right now," said Leroy Butler, one of the lead singers for Baha Men.
Baha Men (formerly known as High Voltage) changed their name after inking a record deal in 1992. There were a number of groups between Canada and the United States with the same name. Management at the time told the group it would be good to have men from The Bahamas, and Baha Men became a reality.
While some faces in the group have changed over the years, the music has evolved along with the change as the group strives to maintain its competitive edge, which has resulted in the group's inclusion in the World Cup compilation CD.
Today Baha Men is comprised of Colyn Grant, drums; Anthony Flowers, percussion; Jeffrey Chea, keyboard; Patrick Carey, lead guitar; Herschel Small, lead guitar, Taylor on bass, and Butler, Knight and Carey on vocals.
As they prepare to launch their original single, Baha Men is heading into rehearsals next week in preparation for an upcoming Latin American tour. The video for "Night and Day" has also been completed and will be released on May 27 as well. The video for the single was shot by Lavado Stubbs from Sky High Media.
"I've been here nine years, and everything is mind-boggling, exciting, and a learning experience within itself," said Butler.
Baha Men has enjoyed many successes over the years, and they now have another feather in their cap -- inclusion on one of the hottest compilation CDs of the year.
