Criticizing the Ministry of Tourism's '14 Islands Film Challenge', educator and columnist Nicolette Bethel said she doubts the project will have lasting effects and wonders at the governments lack of faith in local talent.
The ministry's competition will award $21,000 (converted from pounds) for the best films about The Bahamas and some of the footage may end up in future tourism campaigns. Only filmmakers from the United Kingdom were eligible, drawing criticism and leading about a dozen filmmakers and photographers, including Bahamas Film Festival founder and director Celi Moss, to protest in a demonstration on George Street, calling on the government to encourage local talent first.

The Bahamian movie Rain starts at 8pm tonight on Showtime (channel 62 on Cable Bahamas).
Rain tells the story of a young girl who comes to Nassau after her grandmother's death forces her to leave Ragged Island. There she struggles with the big city and dealing with a destructive mother she has never known.

History was made in The Bahamas on Sunday, August 23rd, when Miss Venezuela was crowned Miss Universe for the second consecutive year.
“I feel honoured to be representing my country in this way,” said nineteen-year old Stefanía Fernández, “It’s very exciting that we brought the crown home again to our country.”
Shakespeare in Paradise, designed to be an annual international theatre festival that will place The Bahamas on a global level, will soon be making its way to the stage. Based on similar festivals such as Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe and this region’s Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA), this event will take place in Nassau October 5th-12th, 2009 at various local venues including The College of The Bahamas, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, The Hub, Graycliff and The Marley Resort.
The people in Nassau had the opportunity to share a moment with the 2009 Miss Universe contestants during the float parade down West Bay street held on Thursday. The floats went from Arawak Cay to Crystal Palace Casino.
The annual Miss Universe 2009 beauty pageant will happen on August 23 at the Imperial Ballroom, Atlantis Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas.
Many are awaiting who will be the successor of Miss Universe 2008, Dayana Mendoza from Venezuela. This year, 84 countries have sent their delegates. A short video showing their names, countries and photos of their swimsuit and evening gown can be watched below.

6:10pm - People are starting to queue up at the entrance of the Sheraton Hotel which is hosting this years Miss Universe 2009 Fashion Show.
The press are starting to arrive and set up to record and report on this fabulous event. The catwalk and lighting both look absolutely fabulous. The press area, where we're sitting, is located right at the end of the catwalk, and I'm positionedright at the front.
NASSAU -- Education has found its muse. Fashion! The 16 year old son of actor John Travolta died tragically on January 2nd, 2009 while the family was vacationing at Old Bahama Bay in West End.
Autopsy results are expected soon.

This is what Morgan Freeman's car looked like by the time it got done rolling off the highway. The red circle shows Freeman still in the vehicle waiting to be cut out. He was driving but the car, a '97 Nissan Maxima, belonged to his passenger Demaris Meyer. The crash happened near his home in Mississippi. Freeman is said to be resting comfortably after surgery on his broken arm. Meyer's condition has yet to be updated. Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have played a part. Look for broken bits of the car to soon appear on eBay.
