BAAA Annual Year End Awards Luncheon

The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations is pleased to announce that the 2010 Annual Year End Awards Luncheon will be held on Sunday, January 2nd, 2011.

Under the patronage of our own Golden Girls, who celebrate the tenth anniversary of their Sydney Olympic victory this year, the event will begin at 2:00pm at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Hotel on Cable Beach. We are quite pleased that three of the five Golden Girls are able to grace us with their presence this morning.

The year 2010 saw over one hundred and sixty athletes wear Bahamian colors all over the world. Bahamians won two global titles both in the 400m. Veteran quarter miler Chris Brown won the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha, Qatar in March and four months later sixteen year old Shaunae Miller won the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada.

Some of the other highlights of the year include Grand Bahama's Tynia Gaither winning the Silver medal in the 200m in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and High Jumpers Donald Thomas and Trevor Barry winning Gold and Silver medals in both the CAC Games and Commonwealth Games.

It is now time for the BAAA and the public to Celebrate Our Youth in Athletics, which is the theme of this year's luncheon.

The Charley Major Award will be presented to the overall Athlete of 2010. Nominees are Chris Brown, Donald Thomas, and Shaunae Miller.

Charley Major was one of the world's top High Jumpers in the late 1920's.

Numerous other categories will be selected.

In addition to honoring our athletes, the BAAA will also honor our coaches and officials. The Henry Crawford Award, named after legendary coach Henry Crawford. The Roderick Simms Award, named after officiating pioneer Roderick Simms will be presented to the Official of the Year.

We are pleased to report that the selection will be done by an independent panel of knowledgeable Track and Field enthusiasts.

The afternoon should be an exciting one for supporters of our sport and the public at large. The public will be able to see and touch our Golden Girls as well as the other athletes. We have planned an Academy Award type event. The Master of Ceremonies will be Grand Bahama's David Wallace. DJ Rev will put you in the celebration mood and athlete KC Wallace-Whitfield of "Phone Card" fame will perform several renditions. We are anticipating a surprise guest performance.

The donation for this magnificent event is only $50. Tickets can be obtained from the BAAA office at the Pan Am Building in the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre, the Colony Club Resort and Suites, St. Albans Drive as well as The Prescription Parlor Pharmacy on East St. South.

We once again thank the Government of The Bahamas, Corporate Bahamas and our enthusiastic supporters for your support in 2010 and look forward to your continual support as our athletes march forward to Daegu 2010 and London 2012.
